When HR (Human Resources) attacks gays. Yes to H8

In thirty states it is legal to fire someone for being gay or assumed to be gay but not here in California. This state has enacted statutes barring sexual-orientation discrimination in the workplace. In many companies it is the function of the HR department to administer, train, and educate the employees about the laws and policies. They cover workplace harassment and discrimination, diversity training, and compliance with state and federal laws. It is the responsibility of human resource managers to conduct these activities in an effective, legal, fair, and consistent manner.

What do you do if the person in HR is a bigot, supports discrimination, fears homosexuals, or believes in church over state in the workplace?
I think it is important to ask management if the HR person’s actions are damaging the reputation and goodwill of the company.

Let’s look at some HR people in California that contributed to the “Yes on 8” campaign that striped rights away from gays and lesbians.

One of the most outrageous is the HR person at NetApp. Nancy Saunders lists her occupation as “HR Operations”. She made two donations. One was for $5,000 and another for $25,000. She gave away $30,000 to say YES to discriminate and take rights away from same-sex couples. She must really dislike gays.

Don't forget to check the database (http://www.sfgate.com/webdb/prop8/) to see if your accountant, insurance agent, realtor, dentist, or lawyer is on the list of supporters of “Yes on H8”.

UPDATE: Interesting discussion about censoring HR in Human Resource Executive Online. "How can HR executives protect their companies from fallout when an employee takes an unpopular and public stand on an issue? And what happens when it is the HR executive's own viewpoints that draw fire?"

prop8 has come and gone. these people had the right to give the Yes on 8 just as we had the right to give to no on 8. it was there right no matter how we feel about it.

I see everything is post those who gave to yes on 8 but no one is posting the list of those who gave to no on 8... I just wonder how many of our so-called friends in Hollywood didn't give to help us....

I think what you are doing is great but you know, by putting a link to the websites of those companies on your blog you are actually helping them... Google uses the number of links into a site to decide on the ranking in search results, the more links the better.
so while you meant it differently, google might see those links as a vote of confidence in them

I must agree with SicknTired. People have the right to support their own personal causes. Now just because they feel a certain way doesn't mean that they treat people horribly at work. I'm in HR, I supported Yes on 8, and have never treated nor will I ever treat a person with malice because of their sexual orientation. Please don't think that people in HR can't stand by their beliefs and also be professional at the same time. So as you don't ask others to judge, don't do the same. Thanks!

To the person that says no one posted the list on who donated to No on 8, well first of all that's not true, the data is out there, but most of society doesn't care about that and the donaters to No on 8 are actually proud to have donated to stop hate. It's the Yes on 8 crowd that are ashamed, as they should be, instead of using their money where it could've really helped people in this faltering economy, they wasted it on a stupid, immoral and vile cause. They're sick, sick people, anyone who supports or donates money to take rights away from people is a horrifying human being, period, enough said, nothing can be explained that makes any sense to deny that. The fact is they're are horrible human beings out there and there names SHOULD be smothered for us to see, they should be proud of what they've done. Despicable human beings, even those f-ed up HR reps.

Hi,

It’s really good to know about this. Looks really interesting!!!

Thanks for writing such a great article. It’s really good to know about HR in such a detail. There are many companies reeling under pressure in the last two years, due to the global economic downturn. And it has become absolutely necessary for companies in every business to look at cost cutting measures.
Many successful companies, irrespective of size, have been smartly becoming a PEO . What does PEO mean? It means Professional Employer Organization. It is an integrated and cost effective approach to the management and administration of the Human Resources of the Organization.

I grew up with the belief that marriage is between a man and a woman. But before you condemn me for my personal beliefs I will say that while I may disagree with alternative lifestyles, as an American I will defend to the death your right to live the lifestyle you choose.

How I see it is that WE LIVE IN A FREE COUNTRY. But there is a price for that freedom and that price is that we have to tolerate many things we don't agree with. While there are many people who may disagree with alternative lifestyles the question is are we willing to take away other people's rights to live the lifestyle they choose? Because if we start throwing up walls on what society at-large perceives to be immoral then we will not be able to see or hear anything.

I voted NO on proposition 8 simply because I felt the freedom to choose whatever lifestyle people choose to live was in a very real way in my hands.

It's great to know information about HR personnel and managers making horrific contributions publicly. They shouldn't be able to work in the HR Department if they're showing bigotry in public.

That's like me kicking my boss in the balls and castrating him by force, beating his ass and breaking both of his knee caps and expect to still have a job in the morning.

You voted to strip rights from a group of people simply because they were born a certain way and yet you promise to never treat those people with malice.

You are obviously lying, since that support was an act of malice.
